Journey to Comic-Con 2006 (Part8)
By: John Baez

Part II of our gaming pod construction will lead us to a finished monitor bracket and the start of the console shelves. If you missed Part I, be sure to check it out here

The finished sleeve ready to go. The black threaded stops will extend past the sleeve and directly engage the pipe.

In the initial drawings the two horizontal pipes were connected by elbows and more pipe, but it started to look really klunky, so we redesigned and now a wooden surface will be suspended between the pipes, forming a shelf.

Now it's time to get out the sheet aluminum and build the monitor brackets. We'll use the 24" LCD widescreen computer monitors from the office, so we only have to buy mounting brackets and speakers. Cool!

Yep, that's the infamous drill press at work. It's late at night so the pieces are ganged together to be cut in one pass.

The mostly finished bracket. We'll try to find some better nuts and bolts, but the monitor will hide most of ugliness. This is a two sided pod, so there's another bracket on the other side.

Time to make the shelf. I threw around a lot of ideas for a shelf, but while I was at IKEA buying the drapes for the storage area of our booth, I happened to see some butcher block cutting boards. The price was less than other materials I was looking into, and the wood will be a nice warm contrast to all the metal and plastic. This one change was like a domino effect which changed a lot of the design of the pod and how the target hardware is presented.

We will finish up tomorrow and hopefully have a semi-finished product. Remember Comic-Con is only 7 days away!
We're at booth #4604, we will be easy to spot since we are totally awesome and will have chickens everywhere.
